Megalithic Portal Tomb

I am delighted to finally include images of the portal tomb at Fenagh Beg on the Megalithic Ireland website. Some of our previus visits to this popular megalithic monument were curtailed by the presence of a bull. But luckily José was able to get access to the tomb, with the help of the landowner, on this occasion. Over the years the monument has taken on many different forms and shapes, it has been described as, the Elvis Presley of megaliths, a Teddy Boy and even one of the Jackson Five. This is all due to the vegetation growing on top of the roofstone. In this way it is similar to the portal tomb at Carrickglass in County Sligo.

The monument is situated on a low grass covered cairn that lies on the western side of a ravine. It consists of a 2.4 metre long by 2.2 metre wide chamber. It is aligned in a SE-NW direction with two portal stones, one of which is broken, at the south-east. There are two sidestones and possibly a split backstone. Lying on the ground next to the chamber is a huge chunk of the broken roofstone. At present the roofstone is resting on the backstone and just one of the portal stones. Sadly this visually striking monument needs a lot of care, before it is lost forever. A special thanks to José for sharing these superb images with us.
